If a substance has the ability to attract, hold, and then remove positively charged particles, we refer to that ability as its cation exchange capacity (C.E.C.).

Remember high school science? Positive particles are attracted to negative particles, and vice versa. If particles have the same charge, they tend to repel each other. In the classroom, the concept is demonstrated with magnets.

If you try to stick two magnets together with the same charge, they just push each other away. But if one magnet has a positive charge and one has a negative charge... whoosh! They race towards each other and stick together.

So, at the end of the day... it's the "attraction of opposites" that creates cation exchange capacity, which makes this clay so powerful.

You see, the clay particles in high-cation clay carry a very powerful negative charge. They attract particles with a positive charge. Remember a minute ago we said "positive" doesn't always mean good? Free radicals, which we know to be harmful, usually carry a positive charge.
